By January 2027, BT will permanently retire its old copper-based telephone lines, including the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). As the UK transitions to a fully digital communications infrastructure, the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is being phased out. BT Openreach has announced that by the end of January 2027, all PSTN and ISDN services will be switched off in favour of an All-IP network. This change, often referred to as the "BT switch-off," is part of a nationwide initiative to modernise telephony. At the centre of this digital shift is VoIP: Voice over Internet Protocol.
