What is the BT Switch Off, and how will it affect your business?

The UK is preparing for a major transformation in its telecommunications network. By January 2027, BT will permanently retire its old copper-based telephone lines, including the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). These legacy systems have connected homes and businesses for decades, but they are no longer fit for purpose in a digital-first world.

So, what does this change mean for your business?

The end of the copper phone line

The PSTN has been the foundation of British telecoms for more than a century. Built to support voice-only calls over copper wires and analogue lines for broadbands, it is now out of step with the way businesses communicate. With cloud-based services, flexible working, and growing reliance on high-speed fibre optic broadband, it is time for the UK to move on.

In its place, digital alternatives such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and cloud-based phone systems will become the standard. These solutions deliver clearer calls, greater flexibility and better integration with the modern workplace.

What exactly is being ‘switched off’?

The change affects more than just traditional landlines. Businesses still using ISDN phone systems, older broadband services like ADSL or FTTC, or analogue devices such as alarm systems, lift phones, or card machines will all be impacted.

If your systems rely on copper phone lines to function, they will stop working unless migrated to digital alternatives.

What are the risks of delaying?

Failing to plan for the switch off could leave your business exposed to:

  • Unexpected downtime

  • Inability to process card payments

  • Failure of security or fire alarms

  • Disruption to internal and external communications

While the deadline may feel far off, a last-minute rush could mean long lead times, limited availability of engineers, and unnecessary pressure.

The digital alternatives

Many businesses have already started the transition to digital communications, choosing options such as:

  • VoIP phone systems, which make and receive calls via the internet

  • Hosted cloud phone solutions, ideal for flexible and hybrid working

  • Full-fibre broadband services that support fast, reliable data and voice connectivity

These technologies are not only future-ready but often more cost-effective than traditional systems, offering features such as call recording, voicemail to email and mobile apps for working on the go.

Why early action matters

By acting now, your business can make the switch gradually and with minimal disruption. You will have time to test new systems, train your staff, and spread the investment across a manageable timeline.
